Experiencing the Dance and Movement of Rudolf Laban (1879-1958):

An Interactive Performance

Nunzia-Beltrametti-Tirelli

Rudolf Laban was a central figure at Monte Verità. In An Extraordinary Life, Valerie Preston-Dunlop’s biography of Laban, we learn that while he was also a painter, architect and illustrator, it was through movement and dance, as a performer, choreographer and mentor, that his lasting impact was made. “Through his research into movement, he uncovered the interconnectedness of the body and the psyche, the individual and the group, and he devised a revolutionary method of movement notation that continues its use and influence today. Laban inspired others from all walks of life to take up and develop his work.”

Laban Events on Monte Verità

To experience Laban’s work for ourselves, we have an interactive evening performance offered by dancer Nunzia Beltrametti-Tirelli that begins with a short walk, “a promenade” to the icosahedron, a permanent sculpture on the grounds of Monte Verità that relates to the training methods Laban devised for dancers. This will be followed by the presentation/performance of Laban’s “Space Harmony”, and an opportunity for us to practice a group movement known as Laban’s “Dimensional Cross.” We’ll then be treated to a video presentation of Monte Verità: A Source of New Dance, and a taste of what Valerie Preston-Dunlop calls “Choreutic Meditation.”

Euphony:

The Art of Listening

Daniel Levy

This evening, we will be joined online by the internationally-acclaimed concert pianist, Daniel Levy, for an experience of Euphony, his approach to listening that emphasizes the spiritual dimensions of music. Schumann remarked that, “In music, the soul feels in its own homeland” and Euphony precisely reflects this phrase. It deals with the subtle effects of sound on the human being and helps us remember why music is a golden key to the knowledge of ourselves and of the universe.

Euphony emphases the deep experience of joy and beauty within sound as a whole, and shows its therapeutic potential for enhancing harmony within human relationships, producing psychophysical relaxation, and expanding self-knowledge.

Note: This live evening performance will be offered online.
